Explanation for the black background in Space?

I would like a scientific explanation to why any picture of Earth and/or Moon portrays a completely pitch black view of the cosmos.

Thanks.
On the pictures you saw, the Earth or the Moon are brightly lit by the Sun. This means that the camera has to adjust to the bright light, so it used a short exposure time. Stars are very faint, and the camera would have to use a long exposure to get them to show.

There are some pictures of the night side of the Earth, and some stars are visible.
